What have we been doing since last year?
In 2022, along with our volunteers and Sandbanks Park, we began a five year program to reduce buckthorn growth on West Point.
We had a Buckthorn Blitz last fall, where we made a great start on removing this invasive species!
Have a look at our album of images...
Sandbanks staff and volunteers are well into planting and restoration work!
• 1800 young tree seedlings and 15 larger sugar maple trees have been planted throughout the park. (Many donated by the Friends of Sandbanks!)
• Friends of Sandbanks donated 114 mayapple seedlings which have been planted at West Point
• Marram grass has been transplanted into the closed campsites on Outlet B Campground to help stabilize the Outlet River shoreline.
• Thousands of Garlic Mustard plants have been removed from sensitive areas throughout the park
The young tree seedlings and larger sugar maples have been carefully planted by Prince Edward Collegiate Institute students,
Friends of Sandbanks volunteers and Sandbanks staff. Planting locations included the 'Butternut Field' off County Road 12
and throughout campgrounds that experienced mature tree loss due to harsh winter storms and the invasive emerald ash borer.
